A Family Room Framed by Stunning Fall Foliage

Perfect for Homes Surrounded by Nature

The walls and black metal-framed windows create a mid-century modern aesthetic. The floor is charcoal slate, laid in an elongated grid pattern.

Planning to build a home nestled in the woods?

Take inspiration from this stunning project by architect Frank DiSarra of FrankFranco Architects. To embrace the surrounding forest views, DiSarra designed a living space with expansive glass openings, turning the fall foliage into a living artwork.

Maximizing Natural Light and Views

Extensive use of glass floods the family room with sunlight.

The generous use of glass not only floods the family room with natural daylight but also frames breathtaking views of the autumn landscape. “It’s not just about brightness—these openings bring the beauty of nature directly into the home,” says DiSarra. The flat horizontal roofline and minimalist grey box structures, punctuated with curtain wall windows in black metal frames, create a striking mid-century modern aesthetic.

Natural Materials Meet Elegant Functionality

The interior features a palette of natural materials, including granite tile walls with marble-like veining.

Located on a 2-acre site near a conservation area in Toronto, Canada, the home sits on the footprint of a 60-year-old cottage, allowing new construction under strict local regulations. The interior showcases a refined palette of natural materials, including a feature wall clad in granite tile with marble-like veining in olive green, brown, black, grey, and soft white—making it the centerpiece of the family gathering area. Meanwhile, the charcoal slate flooring, arranged in an elegant checkerboard pattern, highlights sustainability and reduces material waste.
