Sassy Bow: An Art-Filled Contemporary Home

Discover Studio Jaene’s Sassy Bow residence in Delhi—a 6,000 sq. ft. modern contemporary home blending bold design, bespoke art, and functional family living across three generations.

Studio Jaene conceptualised this sprawling, modern, contemporary-inspired apartment in Delhi to reflect the homeowners’ passion for art and their extensive decor collection. The Sassy Bow home, a 6,000 sq. ft. residence, was designed with a strategy centred around the lure of art as its primary muse. This approach by the designer aligned perfectly with the residents’ passion for appreciating and collecting art throughout their home. This artistic narrative translated into the home’s theme, but the heart and soul of the home, reflecting the residents’ sophisticated appreciation for aesthetics in every detail.

The honey-colored Sesann sofa paired with a textured rug creates a warm and inviting atmosphere in the modern living room.

The homeowners challenged the design team to break free from the stereotypes of Delhi homes—flamboyant luxury with loud colour schemes, ornate wallpapers, and gilded furniture. The goal was to embed the vibrant personalities of the family members while steering clear of conventional opulence. As a home shared by three generations—a couple, the couple’s parents, and their three children—the brief conceptualised a thoughtful balance between open, communal areas for interaction and private spaces for retreat.

The linear footprint is designed with three distinct zones tailored to specific functions and varying degrees of privacy. One wing houses the grandparents’ and children’s bedrooms with a work den, while the other is dedicated to the couple’s suite with an expansive walk-in-wardrobe. At the heart of the home lies the living room, visually and spatially connected to the dining and kitchen areas, serving as a communal hub that binds the family together. The house spans two floors, rooted in modernist design principles championing clean lines and spatial fluidity. This design ethos is carried across both levels.

The staircase becomes the focal point of the double-height foyer design.

Upon entering, one is welcomed into an unmissable double-height foyer with staggered checkered black and white marble flooring. A stark black spiral staircase anchors the area. The foyer opens into a vestibule, with a custom-designed deep red console with a wave-like form lining its eastern edge. Two amorphous dollop-like decor pieces strategically embedded echo its rich red adorning on the wall’s edge, and bespoke artwork references the checkered flooring. Opposite, a genkan-inspired corner with peach cream beige-hued ottomans breaks the formality. The ceiling’s undulating, cloud-like texture is designed to reinforce the fluid, conversational nature of the space.

The kitchen area seamlessly connects with the family room and dining space.

Beyond the vestibule, the living room extends into the dining area and kitchen to its west. It is divided subtly by two columns, one structural and the other custom-built to double as a display unit for the homeowners’ art collection. The structural column is transformed into an artwork by applying textured black and white paint, merging into the white ceiling for a cohesive visual narrative. A honey-hued Sesann sofa paired with tactile fabric rugs creates an inviting ambience in the living room, while the adjoining dining area is defined by a sculptural exotic green quartzite rock table and wooden chairs upholstered in textured fabrics. A bespoke luminaire crafted to evoke the serrations of a seashell hover above, complementing the artistic furniture. The backdrop to the dining area features a hand-painted black-and-white mural with fluid lines and forms, complementing the mural on the structural column, executed collaboratively by the design team and the residents, expressing their shared love of art.

The master bedroom features a cozy reading corner, a luxurious en-suite bathroom, and a spacious walk-in wardrobe.

The open kitchen is strategically designed with an array of built-in storage units, balancing functionality with the home’s refined minimalist design. A shimmering colour palette of charcoal grey, beige and peach is adopted for the space and contrasted with striking black handmade stools with a shimmering finish. To the south, the kitchen opens into a prayer room; its isolated location evokes a sense of tranquillity. Designed as a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional prayer space, finished in liquid brass finish, reflecting the homeowners’ modern yet subtle take on a mandir.

Artistic elements and animal-shaped sculptures bring a playful and youthful spirit to the boys’ bedroom design.

The primary suite for the couple is located in the quieter western wing. It features three distinct zones — a peaceful sleeping retreat with a cosy nook, a luxurious ensuite, and a museum-like walk-in-wardrobe. The creamy white-toned walls with oakwood bedrest panelling in the sleeping area echo the colour palette of the rest of the spaces, while textured wall panels, tactile fabrics, honed marble, and bespoke art pieces, including zig-zag patterned panels painted in poppy colours, add subtle drama to the space. Defined by checkered black and white flooring, a section of the bedroom is designed as a cosy den for the couple and features a wooden mantel with a firebox. The firebox is accentuated with a knitted ceramic decor piece to evoke a traditional fireplace. A bespoke chandelier and a black-and-white mural depicting a forest infuse the space with a sense of calm. The en-suite is cladded in red ceramic tiles and features plants as vibrant accents. A chandelier casts soft light over the freestanding bathtub; the warm lighting and earthy red tones create an intimate experience. The expansive 9 x 9 ft. walk-in-wardrobe is designed as the couple’s private sanctuary and embodies a museum-like ambience — their belongings are neatly organised and artfully displayed on a central shelf and wall-mounted units with transparent panels.

A functional and stylish home office space designed for productivity.

The southeastern wing harbours the parents’ bold colour-toned luxe bedroom, kids’ bedrooms and a home office, featuring a calming colour scheme of bisque, black, latte and white with pops of colourful elements that enliven the space. The sons’ bedroom is designed to accommodate the needs of two boys of drastically different ages: one a 5-year-old toddler and the other an 18-year-old teen. The contrasting personalities and ages called for a combination of colours that combines the best of both worlds, resulting in decor elements catering to both individuals. The daughter’s bedroom embodies a palette of white, beige, and peach, with pops of primary colours on the bed’s headboard, lamp, and elements on her study table, enlivening a sombre-themed room.

This modern contemporary apartment is thoughtfully designed by Studio Jaene.

Artistic elements, such as figurines, wall-hung artworks, and sculptures depicting animals, bring in a youthful spirit for the adolescent residents, while tactile decor items crafted in organic materials such as linen, boucle and wood create a more sophisticated ambience for the parents. Each bedroom tells its story, with personalised themes realised through distinct art and decor elements.

By weaving bespoke art and design elements into each space, the design of the Sassy Bow residence embodies the essence of its art-loving residents. It transforms the house into a unique representation of their identity.
